Up early to get down to La Mission Haut-Brion for nine and as usual I take the wrong turning off the Rocade. From there I drive up to Saint Emilion to visit the airport terminal that is Cheval Blanc, then over to Le Tertre-Roteboeuf, Bonalgue, Angelus and finally Chateau Ausone, where I share a sandwich with Alain Vauthier since we have never really spoken outside en primeur. I almost run out of petrol on the journey back to airport, notwithstanding a large block of something that falls off a lorry into my path. If it had been rock, I would be dead, but instead my car swerves and crunches underneath the chassis. Who says a wine critic is not a perilous vocation?
Collapse when I get home. Knackered.
