Thursday 23rd September

After a break from wine and writing, it’s time to get back into the (sweaty) saddle with a hardcore day of tasting, so it’s in early to the big smoke for the Cru Bourgeois 2008 tasting. I have an inkling of where the venue is located, so recognizing the back of Robert Joseph’s head, I [...]

Wednesday 22nd September

After a solid day writing, I make a rare excursion into the wine department of Tescos in order to procure a “Bordeaux”, just to see if they stock any. I return with a packet of Ibuprofen, the NME, a pint of milk and a bottle of Chateau Tronquoy-Lalande 2003, which was a decent vintage in Saint Estephe. [...]

Monday 20th September

I finish off painting the living room today. I think the paint is now worth more than the actual house. Daisy tries to lend a hand on paintbrush duty but I hand her a broom and order her to start sweeping. They great thing about three-year olds is that once they start performing an errand [...]

Sunday 19th September

I am feeling a little better. I work a little in the morning and then get back to the house to paint the kitchen and the dining – a solid 5-hour session that puts me back on schedule. I get back around seven and spend the evening in quiet repose on the sofa, ensuring that [...]

Saturday 18th September

Dad pops round in the morning for a shower, having slept on the fold-out bed in the new house covered in sawdust. After a quick breakfast we are back into the new abode to continue sanding and painting, although I am feeling like warmed up dog-poo thanks to my manflu. We are finishing by midday, [...]

Friday 17th September

Dad arrives in the morning with a hired industrial sander. I have used one of these before and I must admit that when you fire them up, they can be a bit unnerving what with the deafening din, the dust and sparks. But once you get into the swing of it, it is not so different [...]

Thursday 16th September

Finish off what I can upstairs before the industrial sander arrives tomorrow. The upstairs of the new house is looking “shabby-chic (but not to shabby)”, which is the interior design “theme” that Tomoko has chosen. I don’t quite know what that means. I just follow instructions. Of course, I cannot switch off from wine completely, so I catch the train [...]

Wednesday 15th September

Finish off the skirting boards in Dulux gloss white. Hopefully my wife can cope with a small section of the house not being painted in Farrow & Ball. Perhaps best not to tell her…unless she does a DNA analysis on the skirting board.

Tuesday 14th September

My usual routine. Take Lily to a new school on the other side of Guildford, a quick trip to B&Q and then to the new house for more DiY. It seems strange not thinking about wine. Perhaps that is a good thing since I haven’t taken many days off from writing this year, including weekends. I [...]

Monday 13th September

Painting. Painting. Painting. Thank God I have my old clock radio to keep me company. I am becoming more au fait with the pop charts thanks to the constant soundtrack of Radio 1. I’m still down with the kids. I am particular fond of Katy B’s “Katy On A Mission” because it sounds so 2010. Eminem’s duet [...]
