Today is the annual Champagne Bureau tasting/social at the Banquetting Hall near Trafalgar Square. As usual, it is thronging with people, of which about 50% are there to taste champagne and 50% there to meet their mates. Of course, it’s all glitz…this is Champagne after all, with a heavy presence of media, represented today by the unlikely presence of Peter Bazelgate, the man who afflicted Great Britain with Big Brother. I might ask him whether I could get in on “Big Brother 10″ this summer, but I am too busy trying to find decent champagnes that have not been over-sulphured.
I then have a contretemps with the organizers in trying to solve the pressing problem of my empty stomach. Because I have not registered, I am denied sustenance of any shape or form. All I need is a sandwich. Just a bloody sandwich to mop up those bubbles. I have to come back after an hour and then, and only then, am I deigned with a fillet of wild salmon and morsal of chocolate pudding.
Afterwards, I nip up to House of Fraser to buy a voucher for Tomoko’s 40th birthday tomorrow, plus a suitable card upon which Lily and Daisy scrawl their names, day-glo flowers, a shower of pink hearts and a Dali-like blob.
