Today is Lily’s birthday. Exactly five years ago this morning, I was driving through the streets of South London that were haemorrhaged with traffic, careering onto the right hand side of the road with my wife having contractions and threatening to make an irrepairable mess of the passenger seat en route to Kings College Maternity Ward. (You can read the original diary entry by clicking on the Year 2005 link.)
Things are calmer five years on and Lily is devouring her Frosties next to me with ravenous glee, preparing to go off to school. Where as the time disappeared to?
I have a busy day tasting, first the 2008s from Comte de Liger-Belair in the cellars of Justerini & Brooks, and then to the Landmark Hotel to taste the complete range of 2008s from Louis Jadot, which is always an intriguing exercise as one can assess wines from Cotes de Nuits Blanc up to their Montrachet. It takes a couple of hours to taste just shy of 50 wines. Then I have a quick lunch out in the hotel’s restaurant, which is quite delicious, then back home where I find Lily holding court with her coterie of friends. Lily’s Gang. She cajoles them into watching a Japanese DVD, which of course, they do not understand, although perched on the sofa the 5-year olds seem completely transfixed by Hello Kitty and all the other bizarre characters that H.K. hangs around with. I fear they may be corrupted by this frankly weird DVD that features scantily clad women lip-synching to hardcore techno tracks espousing their adoration for Hello Kitty.
In the evening: writing and writing.
