No Burgundy tastings today, which may explain my rather startled stated. I escort Lily into her school, flirt a little with her teacher because that is what dad’s are supposed to do (I think it is a discipline thing…as if being disciplined by our wives is not enough.) I do a bit of writing and then head up to Notting Hill to “The Ledbury” for a quick meeting and then a dinner with fellow oenophiles. It is a momentous day for the restaurant, as during our lunch, news filters through that it has been awarded a second Michelin star and since its proprietor is dining with us, congratulations flow and a Dom Perignon Rose 1996 is opened in honour of Brett Graham, a brilliant chef…and an Aussie to boot! Remarkable!
I then lose my ticket for the return journey, but thankfully have kept the receipt. As expected, when I try to get a replacement ticket, they refuse to give me one. So I ask what the receipt is for? The automaton behind the bullet-proof screen replies that it proves that I purchased a ticket. I ask if that is so, why can’t he therefore give me a replacement one? He replies, it is not Southwest trains policy i.e. otherwise, we would not be able to fleece you for any more of your hard-earned money.
At this point, I understand the reason for the bullet-proof glass.
