Just when the snow is melting to leave an ice-rink between home and station, another few inches of the white stuff is dumped on Guildford and its infrastructure immediately implodes. School is cancelled, which means by this rate Lily will graduate from university in about 2188, although bizarrely, Daisy’s kindergarten, which she was due to start on Monday, has forced open its doors. Precisely how we can get Daisy through the snowdrifts is anyone’s guess, though the harridan that runs it sounds suitably piqued when we telephone our excuses…like we might die en route.
Still, that does not prevent me from packing my rucksack to gamble on Southwest Trains. It crawls at snail’s pace, but I do actually manage to get into London and attend the Bouchard Pere et Fils tasting: great wines, but stale sandwiches at lunch, which is taken with the ever-wonderful Dame Margaret Rand. Then down to Berry Brothers Burgathon where fortunately there is no Matthew Jukes to sabotage my notes. I am asked whether I would record a video, espousing my views on the vintage? I agree, then remember how disheveled and awkward I appear on screen (visit BBR’s blog to see how crap I look, but please bear in mind that I have been tasting north of 100 wines per day.) After that, across town to the third dégustation de jour back at Middle Earth Temple Hall and by 7.30pm…sod it. I rack up to Montrachets side-by-side, write my notes and then decide that it would be a suitable denouement for the day.
I spend the evening writing up notes until one in the morning. Never say I do not work hard for my wonderful job.
